Just over a year ago, my girlfriend Margaret and I went in search of awesome cupcakes in NYC. We ended up at Magnolia Bakery one afternoon where I bought my mom a cute I cupcake NY t-shirt. Fun.
I hadn’t really thought about it much again until this week. As I mentioned in my post two days ago, a local blogger is searching for the best cupcake in Rochester. Fun again!
Yesterday, my girlfriend wrote a cute yet snarky comment about cupcakes becoming the “it” dessert on her FB page. Cupcakes again? I defended the otherwise helpless cupcakes and jokingly stated that I didn’t realize they were the “it” dessert until recently.
In response, one of her friends wrote: The cupcake has been the “it” dessert for awhile now, and its “itness” is fading.
OMG. Has it come to this?
Instead of dealing with obnoxious emo-cutting-edge-music-mega-dumbass comments like “I listened to Chali 2na way before they were played on air” or “I discovered so-and-so before they even had a recording contract,” we now have to contend with hipsters claiming that cupcakes are on their way out after, I'm guessing, a hundred plus years? What’s next: that bacon is also so last year?
They’re only cupcakes people. Cupcakes. If loving them is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.
SeƱor uber-trendy can go have his pain perdu (i.e., French toast for elitists) or perhaps some vegan, artisan chocolates. I’ll have my lard-laden cupcakes with sprinkles, thanks.

Pow! Bang! Crash!
I just received a package of financial statements that my client rendered in Comic Sans. It's a bit hard to take a P&L seriously when it's coming from Wolverine.
Maybe I'll design my bar charts out of hearts (where trending is favorable) or possibly employ some sad emoticons (where the data appears less advantageous).
It's best to know your audience.

Fashion: Turn to the Left
I bought a pair of cute little glasses at a trunk show at 20/20 on Third Ave. when still living in NYC. Today I was once again shopping for glasses given that mine snapped in half. The frigid air in my car last winter proved to be too much. And, contrary to the claims of men everywhere, duct tape is not a miracle panacea. I know because, fashionista that I am, I tried.
While I am soooooooo over little glasses fashion trend (over a decade is a bit long, no?), my choices around here are slim. Other options include looking like bloody Sarah Palin or adopting a Harry Potter-esque style. Right now, I'm leaning towards Mr. Magoo.
What I really want to know is: what eyewear is in style in Paris? Milan? And when are these trends going to hit the hinterlands of America? Can't a cute pair of specs make their way across the lake from Toronto in a bottle for me? Not that it matters. Around here it's de rigueur to wear crocs vs. Stuart Weitzman stilettos. I guess my eyes can be poorly dressed, as well.
We are the goon squad and we're coming to town. Beep beep.

Numskull
I read on A Cup of Joe last week that antlers were so 2004 and "officially over" (really?) which may explain why I found this cow skull at a garage sale last weekend. Good thing I'm no longer living in Manhattan; I'm now at the tail end of a dying trend even in a non-trendy town. Yikes!

Yeah, it's a little too Georgia O'Keefe super-size-me but whatever. One man's trash is another man's treasure?
Which brings me to a somewhat unrelated topic: I am so blinkin' sick of that depressing red color on my living room walls. I was thinking of going neutral (white or a light coffee) but then saw a vibrant, bright green color saturating the walls of Scout & Molly's, a sweet little shop in Greensboro, and I've been thinking about it ever since. Unfortunately, their website doesn't do it justice.
This color in this chair from Le Tramac (found on the gorgeous site All Things Bright and Beautiful) is more like it. I'm looking for sunny and fresh not pea-colored. Perhaps a bit preppy -- hearkening back to my childhood of pink/green monogrammed sweaters and whale belts.

Love it!
